How to read a material palette before work begins

A calm palette is not only about colour. Grain, maintenance, light and edge details decide how a room feels after handover.

A useful palette explains how a home will be used. Timber adds warmth, stone carries daily wear, textiles soften the acoustics and metal should be used as a controlled signal rather than decoration.

Before approving a palette, ask how each surface will age, how it meets the next material and how it behaves in morning and evening light.
